Generosity Moments

Generosity begins by noticing a need.

While some needs are clearly expressed, others reveal themselves through subtle signals that someone is struggling.

Generosity Moments helps you practice noticing what may be needed without rushing to assume, fix, or act.

Noticing is passive; taking responsibility is a choice.

Step 1 of 3 · Understanding the Practice

What is a Generosity Moment?

Many opportunities for generosity may not look like opportunities at first. They may appear as:

  • an interruption
  • an uncomfortable request
  • someone becoming quiet
  • a neighbor struggling
  • a coworker feeling overwhelmed
  • an invitation to contribute
  • a conflict between care and capacity
A Generosity Moment begins when we notice another person’s need and consider whether there is something we might offer.

Noticing a need does not automatically make us responsible for responding to it. Sometimes generosity leads to action. At other times, the wisest response may be to ask a question, listen, respect a boundary, connect someone with another resource, or simply remain attentive.

Step 2 of 3 · Practice Noticing

What Did You Notice?

Generosity Moments help us recognize when care, attention, or discernment may be needed.

Don’t worry about finding the “right” answer – there isn’t one! We’re sharing these examples to offer fresh perspectives, expand your thinking, and inspire your own reflection.

1. What I observed

    2. What I think may be needed

      3. What I do not yet know

        Step 3 of 3 · Living Generously

        Noticing Generosity Moments

Our scenarios provide a practice field; life will supply the next Generosity Moment.

Noticing a need doesn’t mean you have to solve it. It simply means you’re willing to see it.

Keep practicing: notice what is happening, understand what is needed, and consider a caring, wise, and sustainable response.

Over time, you will see that these opportunities have their own timing. Generosity moments emerge at the intersection of noticing a need and discerning whether you have something to offer.

Next time you notice such a moment, pause long enough to consider what it invites you to do.
